What does Bel & Beau mean?

At this time in my life, I have been focusing on finding the beauty, glamour, and elegance in the everyday – curating that one beautiful life that I want to live.  So in coming up with a name, I began thinking of various ways to say “beautiful life”.  I also wanted to incorporate my name, Isobel, somehow and of course, include the little man too….which is how I eventually came to Bel & Beau.  Bel & Beau is a play on the french words for beautiful (belle) and handsome (beau).

How can I get in touch?

I would love to hear from you!  You can email me at isobel {at} belandbeau {dot} com.

Who takes all of your pictures?  What kind of camera do you use?

My husband who uses a Canon Rebel body and shoots most of the photos with a F/2.8 24-70 mm L-series lens.  We also have a 50 mm prime lens that we love for portrait shots.

Why do you blog?

When Holden was a few months old, a friend of mine started a 365 project with her little one, sharing an image and memory every single day on Facebook, and it inspired me to create a blog where I could document Holden’s first year.  It was initially a private space to chronicle my life as a first-time mother because as all mothers know, every single moment with your little one seems to fly by in the blink of an eye and it feels as though is impossible to store every little memory in your head.  I wanted concrete evidence of every single moment so I wouldn’t forget a second.  I also didn’t want to bombard everyone’s Facebook feed with millions and millions of baby pictures (since the majority of my friends don’t have babies yet), so I created this space where friends and family could visit and find out about Holden’s daily life.  The majority of my family lives halfway across the world in New Zealand and Australia, so it was nice to be able to share our life with them.

And then it seems that motherhood is where I really found myself and this space slowly morphed into my creative place where I could share my passion for fashion, design, and photography, and became a little less about Holden’s daily milestones (don’t worry I still document those privately).  Now this blog is a space where I share stories on fashion, beauty, and adventures through motherhood.

What’s the shop about?

Wanting to feel beautiful and elegant in my everyday attire, I started dressing up for no special occasion.  Just because I was spending my days at the playground, chasing around my beautiful boy didn’t mean that I wanted to be stuck in stretch pants and running shoes as my daily uniform.  I lusted after the styles and colors of Naeem Khan, Jason Wu, Lanvin, and Uylana Seergenko skirts and gowns (all of which were completely out of my price range) until I finally decided to make my own version of an long, elegant skirt. Inspired by a vintage pattern that I had bought, I created my very first sample skirt with the help of a friend.

Initially, the plan wasn’t to sell them, but after wearing the skirt and receiving a lot of emails and positive feedback, the Bel & Beau collection was born, a line of elegant and classic styles for women and girls.  I hope to eventually include boys wear as well (because how could I leave Holden out of the picture!).  I will slowly be adding new items to the shop so check back often.
